Meka
"The Miracle Girl"

Meka started a remarkable chapter in her life shortly after her surgery. Even in her weakened state, Meka visited PAWS and had a consultation with Dr. Randy Aronson. Dr. Aronson gave her human hope that Meka could beat the timetable given her. With an integrated treatment plan of supplements prescribed by Dr. Aronson, a healthy eating plan full of protein and antioxidants and lots of love, Meka stayed strong through her chemotherapy and beyond. Pretty soon 6 months had passed since her diagnosis and then 9 months and then 1 year. She beat the odds and marveled even her original oncologist and Purdue University (where she went for her checkups every 3 months). Everyone referred to her as the Miracle Girl.

Okay, so she beat the cancer, now it was time to tackle another ailment Meka had for several years, arthritis. Even though Meka had suffered years from arthritis and it continued to get worse, she was the ultimate German Shepherd Dog, always by the side of her human, as well as leading her pack of GSD's. Once again, Meka sought the PAWS family. In January of 2010, just one year after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Meka started a rehab program with Dr. Aronson and Therapist Sherri Jerzyk. First she underwent aquapuncture and then twice weekly underwater treadmill therapy. She was also given an exercise program by Therapist Sherri Jerzyk to help strengthen her core, to help alleviate the soreness her arthritis gave her. Within a month, Meka was able to play ball and Frisbee even with her young 1 year old brother, as well as walk 2 to 4 miles a day without any limping.

I can truly say the entire PAWS family played a huge part in Meka's continuing quality of life! Meka has now been cancer free for almost 1-1/2 years and has reached the age of almost 9-1/2 years. She continues to lead her family with the same loyalty and strength she did as a pup. Each additional day she loves her family is a gift. The PAWS family are remarkable and truly understand that our pets are an important part of the family. Meka was right, she was not done yet.
